Goon Wah Famous Claypot Lor Shu Fan and Fish Head Noodle

It’s been a while that I’d been updating my blog frequently and it almost like a year for now. Stumble on my blogs and I was surprise that there a lot of comments and people following my blogs. Thank you for the support and for now I’d updated the layout to be more interactive. Coding mode on for a rusty head like me.
For the first post of the year after MIA for quite sometimes, let me share with you a hidden place at kuchai lama where usually I had my lor shu fan aka mee tikus and fish head noodles. It one of the best that I found right now.

Located next to casket selling shop, some ppl reluctant to go there maybe to negative thinking but seem like they business is quite good with such suspicious location. It expended and now having 3 lots where now in the middle is the casket shop. Eerie rights? Kekkekekkee

The famous XO fish head noodles

The XO Claypot Lor Shu Fan

Back to the food, the thing you should order here is the famous XO claypot lor shu fan and the XO fish head noodle. This 2 dishes is enough to share for 2 persons.  What I can say is the food here “Best in The World” and expected a large crowd and you may need to queue for a table. By the way, for the the fish head noodle, the broth is refillable so for soup drinkers as much as you want and it a bonus for those who like to drink more soup.

The sour plum juice is thirst quench drink during hot sunny day

Previously the shop open only during weekdays from 9am to 3pm but eventually after March this year, they open up also on Saturday as well.
For the service, as I can’t speak Mandarin that good, it a bit hard communicate with the server but some of them can speak good English as well. For the location, you can find at following address:-

Non identical twin town Sibu and Sitiawan

Last week, me and my wife went for a day trip to Sitiawan ask my colleague invited us to have a little of foochow food in Sitiawan. Usually, in da office we always argue which foochow food is taste nicer.
The journey took around 2 and half hour from kl. It depends on the traffic near the old palm plantation.
The first food that my friend brought me was kampua mee and loh mee. The stall located not far from ACS school.
The Sitiawan kampua mee

The kampua mee is totally different taste from what we usually have in sibu. It only have one type as shown above.

The Loh Mee with Assam Laksa gravy comes along with it.

The loh mee also different where it been cooked with bamboo shoots. If you can't stand with the bitterness of the bamboo shoots, try and mix it with the assam laksa gravy.

The coconut jelly which originated from Manjung but Penang get the name.

Once we had our brunch at the stall, we are off to have the original coconut jelly. It a refreshing desert which ones need to taste to enjoy. It a desert which had been mix with seaweed.

After we had our coconut jelly, we went to have chendol where the sultan of perak ever ate. It located near a hindu temple. It just a simple desert where a lot of people throngs to the place to have a refreshing desert during a hot sunny day. There were 2 types of chendol which one come with sticky rice and one if the ordinary plain cendol. The best thing is the owner will dress up with a bow tie. Yes indeed a red striking bow tie and that his signatures. He claims that even KFC also use bow tie.

The famous pulut cendol of Sitiawan.

Supper Food for the night crawlers - Nasi Lemak Bumbung @Seapark

If you are looking for nasi lemak at wee hour of the nights, you may try and visit Nasi Lemak Bumbung at Seapark PJ. It open from 6.00pm to 3.00am or 4.00am (Depends on the crowds or the available food their have) on Saturday to Thursday and only closed on Friday.

The famous nasi lemak at Seapark PJ

I get to know this place from a friend of mine which introduce me this addicted nasi lemak especially the sambal nasi lemak and the fried chicken with spices. The waiters look similar might be siblings and you amaze with their skills remembering the orders and can calculate the price like calculator.
According to my friend, previously they opened just beside the road before people start to complaint as it congested the traffic flow. So, they decide to open up in the back alley between two shop houses.
The alley is not on totally flat ground but slightly some tables are at a slope ground. When peak hours, the alley will be full until the end. The alley is well lighted with colour florescent lights and well ventilated with factory metal size fans. The best things, there is no stench smells from the drain and it quite clean. You can also opt to seat outside Maybank ATM but the allocated seat is limited. First comes first seat basic. No need to be shy to look for empty seat or table.
Don’t be amaze, after you had placed your order from the waiter your food will be arriving first than your drinks. It’s normal here as the nasi lemak is easy to prepare than drinks. Besides that, some patrons are like vultures for empty seat. Some will stand beside your table if there see you finish your meals.

Top view of the Nasi Lemak

Side view of the nasi lemak.

Back to the nasi lemak portion consist of one piece of chicken's parts fried until crispy with intensely-flavorful and golden brown in color outside but yet maintain the soft and warm meats inside….  (I’m guessing you will start to drools with this statement. kikikikikiki ). When you have a taste of the chicken, you will order another plate of chicken and additional rice. The egg they prepared in 'mata kerbau'-style dunno what their called in English might be “sunny side-up”.  Now we go to the rice part, it well cooked and fragrant and the problem is the portion. If you are big eater, the portion is just like a small bump on the plate. Next, the sambal which is sweet and nice to eat (not that spicy but just nice).

There is other nasi lemak you can try which is mutton and kosong. I tried the mutton but i still prefer the fried chicken. I'd yet to try the indomie mee but maybe my next trip there i will try and taste. But based on other bloggers feedback on it, it just an ordinary Ibumie Mi Goreng with telur mata kerbau. you may read from the following blog.

As for the location, the shop is easy to be spotted as it just beside Maybank Seapark. The address of the shop is at following address:-

Bumbung Nasi Lemak @ S.E.A Park
Jalan 21/11b, S.E.A Park
Petaling Jaya, Selangor 46300

Koko Crunch Chocolate Cookies

Yesterday, i did my own cookie. It was a simple recipe after i watch Asian Food Channel and have an idea how to make one. So i checked my kitchen storage and i have some of the ingredients such as Nestle Koko Crunch Cereal and Cocoa Powder.
So i went off to Carrefour at Midvalley to buy some utensil and ingredients. I bought myself a small box of paper cups (contains 200 pieces), kitchen scale (need it to weight the item), chocolate rice, flour, corn flour, butter and icing sugar.

Here are my recipe for Koko Crunch Chocolate Cookies (80-100 pieces depending on how big is your cookie)

Koko Crunch Chocolate Cookies

Ingredient:-
  • 180g of butter
  • 175g of icing sugar
  • 250g of flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 egg without the yolk.
  • 3 tablespoon of Cocoa Powder
  • 80-100 pieces of cookie paper cups.
How:-
  1. Mix the ingredients consist of Butter, Icing Sugar, Flour, 2 Eggs in a bowl. Once mix together all the ingredient, add the egg without the yolk with the cocoa powder. Stir and mix well.
  2. Once complete mixing, cover the dough with plastic and place in the fridge for 25-45 minutes. This is to speed it up the harden process for the dough.
  3. Then, you take pieces dough and round it like marbles. Place the marbles look dough on the paper cup then you stick the coco crunch to the dough. You may add your creativity on it how you want to place your koko crunch. For topping you may add some chocolate rice (I forgot to put the chocolate rice on).
  4. Baked the cookies in an oven with the heat had been set to 160C for 25-27minutes. Once baked done, place the cookie on aluminium paper and let to cold itself  for 5-8 minutes and then once it harden, you may put it in container.

Freshly baked from the oven. Let it cool down before placing it inside container.

So, with the simple recipe above i believe that you also can baked some cookies. By the way, this is my first time i baked my own cookies and my mum amaze with it that his son able to baked cookies and even ask me to give her the recipe and prepared some for Christmas this year. I even receive a good feedback from my wife and friends.

Indomie or Ibumie? Which one is the real deal

Most of us here for sure love to eat instant noodles as it easy to cook and simple. As we know in Malaysia, there is an instant noodle which we known since kids as Indomie Mi Goreng. I think most aware that the name of Indomie had changed to Ibumie. And the packaging is the same with the old Indomie packaging with the changes on the logo and the words “Always” had been added.

Old Packaging of Indomie Mi Goreng (Taken from Internet after googling)

Ibumie Mi Goreng packaging the same colour with  the old Indomie (Taken from Internet after googling)

Is it Ibumie bought over Indomie? Not sure about that as well but all we know if we were walking around the aisle looking on the instant noodles shelves display at shopping mall, if we see the brown colour packaging we will think it Indomie Mi Goreng.

I stumbled on a new packaging of Indomie selling behind my house. The packaging is totally different from the "Old Indomie Mi Goreng” which is now currently been used by Ibumie. They are 2 type been sold which are “Mi Goreng Perisa Asli” and “Mi Goreng Perisa Spesial”.

The new packaging of Indomie Mi Goreng

Ibumie Always Mi Goreng Curry Capitan Flavour

For the taste wise of between “Ibumie Always Mi Goreng Asli” and “Indomie Mi Goreng Perisa Asli”, can taste the different and texture on the noodles when serve. On the packaging, the “Ibumie” is one of the product made in Malaysia and been distributed by company called “Biz-Allianz International (M) Sdn Bhd". For Indomie is a product made in Indonesia and been imported and distribute by UDI Marketing Sdn Bhd.
Google the internet and found out “Biz –Allianz International “sites stating that one of the product which available is “Indomie”. Not sure either the website had been updated or they are still distribute Indomie in Malaysia.
So, i’m not sure which one is original mi goreng which i had eaten since my childhood time. For me, the packaging really mislead the consumer. Which one of them is the real deal either “Ibumie” or “Indomie” ? You decide and as for me, as long the noodle is cook, i will eat.

Bazaar Ramadhan @ Bandar Baru Sentul

Each year when the Ramadhan month arrives, there will always be Bazaar Ramadhan mushrooming in each housing estate in a district. Bazaar Ramadan celebrates the many colourful bazaars of the annual fasting month (Bulan Puasa). Food appears to be an unifying factor as more and more people of different race and religion are seen mingling and shopping for food together at these places.

The sheer variety of mouth-watering delicacies, its cross-cultural appeal and the carnival-like atmosphere make this an unique Malaysian institution. Also known as 'Bazar Ramadan' or 'Pasar Juadah', the makeshift stalls usually open from around 4 pm to 7 pm daily, with many traders breaking fast on location.
In KL, there were around 17 bazaars ramadhan and the lists are as follows:-
1) Taman Danau Kota, Setapak
2) Taman Setapak Jaya, Setapak
3) Wangsa Maju Section
4) Lorong/Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman
5) Bandar Baru Sentul
6) Persiaran Setiawangsa
7) Jalan Telawi, Bangsar
8) Taman Tun Dr. Ismail
9) Taman Dato' Senu
10) Sri Melaka Flat
11) Datuk Keramat Market
12) Gombak Market
13) Taman Seri Selamat
14) Taman Koperasi Polis Fasa 1
15) Bukit Indah Ampang
16) Pantai Dalam
17) Kota Agro Jalan Tun Razak
The Bandar Baru Sentul is the nearest to my place and it just a walking distance. For the last 5 years, the bazaar ramadhan and night market was held next to my apartment and this year, the local authority  decide to shift the bazaar ramadhan and the night market to new spot which is along the new stretch road connecting Jalan Pahang and Bandar Baru Sentul.
This year the bazaar stretch much longer, along the 220m stretch, you will amaze with variety food selling in both left and right hand side. Not all food are nice but there are some nice just you need to give it a try.  I won’t eat or drink on food I purchase from the stall unless I reached home to show my respect to muslims people.

Murtabak Maggi in the frying pan.

The main attraction at this Bazaar. I wait for 30 minutes for my murtabak maggi.

Ikan Pari Sambal - Spicy and sweet

Kerang Bakar Sambal

The things that you should try at Bandar Baru Sentul bazaar are the Murtabak Maggi (Chicken or Meat), Nasi Kukus Power Ayam Berempah, Kerang Bakar Sambal, and Nasi Kerabu. There are few shop that you can try but for me, the Murtabak Maggi is the main attraction in this bazaar and you will see few people queing in line for it. Sometimes, at 6:00p.m all the murtabak had sold out.  On the day i went to the bazaar,  i brought my camera along and suddenly I became the main attraction. Some of the vendors ask me to take photo of their food or drinks but i was a bit choosy that time. I only took the food that really worth to take.

Nasi Kerabu

Nasi Kukus Power Ayam Dara Berempah

Murtabak Maggi

Some of the photos I can’t take as I was carrying few plastics bags with food which I purchase from few stalls. I only manage to take the food photo at home for blogging purpose. If I were with a group of friends carrying camera, for sure i won’t be shy to take more photo in the bazaar.

Tiong Hua Road Hidden Treasures (Kompia)

For Sibuian, Tiong Hua Road is located at a flood prone area which usually occurs at year end or when there is any heavy downpour.  Although the place is located in that area, there is a famous local delicacy which is the kompia and the “somboi limau” (sour plum with lime) drink.

Signature drink for the stall, sour plum with lime juice.

Cendol

This place exists since my elder brother era schooling at Sacred Heart Secondary School and the shop still operates till today. The tauke and taukenyiur is still the same but now the daughter is taking up the business with a help of one indon helper. Since my schooling days, i never see the tauke even smile at the customer and have sour face each time i had my kompia there with my wife.
Usually, there have 2 type of kompia either with pork meat or plain kompia. The specialty about this Tiong Hua kompia is the gravy. Nobody can beat the taste of the gravy. Never change since last time. I still remembered last time, after we played football at school. Me and my friends will walk to the shop and enjoy our kompia and drinks. Sometimes the tauke can’t stand with the students because we talked so loud and laughing.

The plain kompia with the special gravy

Kompia with pork and gravy. Previously, the meat is inside the kompia but now outside? ermmm...

When i visited the stall, i stumble with the white dogs still there and alive which always bark at the customer near to the kitchen. But now, it’s getting older and seeing the dog reminds me of the old memories there when I used to throw ice on it when we finish drinking somboi limau. At the backyard, i saw there are 2 younger white dog and 3 puppies at the backyard and i guess his continuous blood line.
So, if you happen to be in Sibu, please don’t forget to drop by at this shop. There is few post about this shop which u can find here. By the way, i heard in Sibu there is a halal kompia with gravy selling somewhere in the kampong side. Hope the shop still exist when i’m going back to Sibu.

OM Burger @ Ampang Jaya

Beside selling normal Ramly burger, they also sell Oblong Burger.

Street burgers are well known as a Malaysian thingy. It’s cheap and easy to find anywhere in any neighnourhood. There is Ramly, Otai, Nice Malaysian and etc. I was browsing through internet to source for a nice and a must try burger. Few said OM Burger at Ampang Jaya at Jalan Kerja Ayer Lama is one of the best sloppiest and drooling burger one should try. You may refer to few blog on this well known burger by other blogger such as Bangsar-Babe , Placesandfood and Aprilyim . This OM Burger owner did appear on Going Places in MAS magazines. He also still display the magazine on his stalls.

Pak Cik Om concentrating on his works.

So, one night I decided to give a try this so called sloppiest burger. By memorizing the roads in Google Maps, i managed to locate the shop (Thank God there is Google Map to guide me the direction as i don’t have such high end gadget such as GPS to guide me to the place).
It was 18 minutes drive from my apartment using AKLEH highway. The shop located in front of 7-Eleven and not far from ISKL  (International School of Kuala Lumpur).
The shop is operates by a pak cik and mak cik. Both of them look so busy and the queue was quite long. In my mind, for sure the burger must be nice as there is another stall of burger open but no one orders from that stalls.

Few others customers is waiting for their burgers to cook.

Most burger stalls are easy to locate, if you see 7-Eleven, there will be a burger stall outside.

The burger being cooked.

I order a special beef burger and ordinary beef burger for my wife. We waited for 40 minutes for the burger. It was sloppy indeed when I saw the mak cik put the mayo, the sauce and etc. I was drooling seeing the sloppiness of the burgers.

The burger packaging, simple.

The normal beef burger, look sloppy indeed.

The Special Beef Burger.

Inside the Special Beef Burger

When back and manage to capture the picture of the burger. For my verdict, the bun and beef are not that soft as what i have at Nice Malaysian Burger. You may refer on my previous post which you may click here.
Maybe i used to the taste of soft bun and tender beef from the burger I used to eat, so the OM burger for me is just an ok ok taste for me.

Kuching Padungan Big Pau vs Cheras Taman Connaught Big Pau

For those who are from Sarawak, we sure be proud with our own big pau which we can found and buy in Padungan at shop named Sin Kwang Foochow Big Pau. The owner is a Foochow from Sibu and she can speak Hokkien very well and fluently. This shop you can’t miss in Padungan road which is on the same row with Everise. Each time I go to Kuching or my siblings coming over to Key Ell, I will ask them to tapau for me either this pau or kolo mee. Some said it was the biggest pau ever sold in Malaysia.
The famous big pau shop in Padungan Kuching.
Different type of pau available which you can choose either cold or steam.
A view of the pau one saucer plate. Quite big for us.
The ingredient inside either you can choose chicken/pork with egg.

Since I’m a bit like a food hunter in Key Ell and I have my own car to drive, I guess that statement should be change as I had discovered a place sell a bigger pau than the big pau sold in Kuching. One word can describe, it’s Huge!! The pau is sold behind a truck beside the shop house road near to the main road. You can’t miss it. The owner commercial name is ANDY LAU and according to him that his family started this pau (steamed bread dumpling) business in 1992 at Taman Connaught, Cheras and named one of their big buns after a famous sexy Hong Kong actress called Yip Chee May aka Amy Yip. Then, I asked our Mr. Andy why he named the bun with this actress name. Straight away he smile and answered me back, “I think you have not born yet or you still small to recognize Amy Yip”. Then he starts to tell the story how he found his marvelous creation. Few people had approached Mr. Andy and commended him on the quality of his pau taste, and some of them asked him to create a big pau, as big as Amy Yip’s breasts! Amy Yip is some actress who was lucky and blessed with a pair of enormous breast’. Try to Wiki or Google it for more info. The weight for the pau itself is 660g, half kg plus and the ingredient contains chicken, pork, eggs and sengkuan (jicama). Yip Chee May Tai Pau is a favorite not only among the locals in Cheras or Kuala Lumpur but also those from outstation. Beside this Pau he has a much bigger pau than this Amy Yip pau but you need to place an order before hand cause it customs build.

The famous Ong Kee Truck selling various of pau by the main road side at Taman Connaught, Cheras.

Bought the biggest pau ever. See how big is the pau compare to the normal 12" plate.
